The downvote button is used to express disagreement with a post. It has already been a major feature on other social media and now makes its appearance on Twitter. Only a small number of clients will have access to the button while it is in testing mode. The test was initially announced by Twitter in July 2021, and its reach has since been expanded, according to a tweet sent out in February 2022.

“We learned a lot about the types of replies you don’t find relevant and we’re expanding this test –– more of you on the web and soon iOS and Android will have the option to use reply downvoting. Downvotes aren’t public, but they’ll help inform us of the content people want to see,” the tweet read.

According to sources, the Downvote function differs somewhat from other social networking sites’ Dislike buttons. Currently, Downvotes on Twitter are only intended for replies to an initial tweet. They are not shared with the author of the tweet or anybody else on the timeline, and they are not made public. According to Twitter, the button is simply intended to let the business know when a response “isn’t adding to the discourse.”
