Sharing a concept is an excellent method to contribute feedback and suggestions for future WhatsApp beta features for Android, iOS, and desktop. We are delighted to share another thought with you today after discussing the concept of receiving a reminder to evaluate privacy for new contacts: a screen recording-blocking feature for WhatsApp video conversations!
In order to preserve their customers’ privacy, WhatsApp launched a screenshot-blocking feature for view-once photographs and videos in October. While photographs and movies transmitted as view once are secured by the screenshot blocking feature, video calls can be readily recorded by everyone on the call, which is why we created an idea for a screen recording blocking feature for WhatsApp video calls.
The idea is to implement a screen recording blocking functionality for WhatsApp video calls: any attempt to take a screenshot or screen recording during a video call will be blocked. This feature ensures that the call’s privacy is protected at all times, which is especially important for sensitive or personal conversations like job interviews or school lessons: allowing these calls to be recorded would be a major breach of trust and could have serious consequences for the participants, such as damaging their reputation or breaching their confidentiality. Preventing recording would increase the already safe privacy of WhatsApp video calls, which are protected by end-to-end encryption.
In addition to protecting users’ privacy, this functionality would make WhatsApp a more appealing option for people who respect their privacy. It would also distinguish WhatsApp from other messaging apps that do not provide this level of security. We feel it is a vital addition to WhatsApp’s already comprehensive portfolio of privacy protections, but we must continue to improve privacy features to achieve progress.
