Meta, Facebook’s parent company, is testing text-based AI tools on WhatsApp and Messenger as part of its efforts to integrate generative AI into its billions of users’ services. Mark Zuckerberg announced the creation of a new top-level product group to develop creative AI tools, with the long-term goal of developing “AI personas that can help people in a variety of ways.”
While Meta initially focuses on chatbots, it may eventually offer these features to businesses for sales and customer support. On Instagram, the company is also experimenting with AI-assisted filters and ad formats, as well as video and multi-modal experiences. Former Apple executive Ahmad Al-Dahle will lead the project, and the team will report to Chief Product Officer Chris Cox.
Meta’s move into AI tools is unsurprising, as the company looks for new revenue streams outside of its recent Metaverse efforts.
