Meta is testing a new way for users to authenticate their accounts via a missed call, which could help the platform save money on SMS charges. The new process would enable users to verify their details by tracking their phone activity. Users would be required to grant call-log access and call management permissions for the feature to work. Meta’s apps would detect the missed call and its details, thereby negating the need for users to answer and enter a password. As Twitter recently highlighted, SMS verification costs social media platforms significant amounts each year, with telco providers charging them for every 2FA SMS sent. Meta’s missed call option could be a way to avoid this while also making it easier for users to log in. The feature is currently supported only on Facebook Lite and in certain regions.
