While the company is currently rolling out some changes to how media from disappearing chats is automatically saved on your device on the most recent beta and public builds of WhatsApp for Android and iOS, it is also working on a feature that will allow users to prevent specific disappearing messages from expiring in a future update of the app.
We discussed a new feature that stops media from being automatically saved to your phone’s gallery for discussions that are about to end in the article about the WhatsApp beta for the Android 2.22.4.14 update. All WhatsApp users on Android and iOS are now receiving updates to media exposure from WhatsApp!
For vanishing chats on WhatsApp for Android, WhatsApp is now automatically disabling the “media visibility” setting, which allows users to access media in their phone’s gallery. This helps keep media in disappearing chat threads more private and ensures a better privacy experience when utilizing disappearing messages.
A similar change is also being implemented on WhatsApp for iOS, where vanishing chats automatically disable the “Save to Camera Roll” option. If the general setting is enabled in this scenario, pictures, videos, and GIFs are never automatically saved in your camera roll.
The option to manually store media exists for some users on some versions of Android, so keep in mind that you can still do so in disappearing chats. You can save media as usual on WhatsApp for iOS.
Within a day, the modifications should be visible to all beta and public build users.
