WhatsApp, one of the most popular messaging apps in the world, is adding a new feature called channels. These channels are essentially private newsletters that users can subscribe to. While channels won’t be end-to-end encrypted like personal messages, WhatsApp assures that they won’t affect the privacy of users’ conversations, which will still be end-to-end encrypted.
The idea behind channels is to give users more control over the content they want to see. They won’t be auto-subscribed to channels, and there won’t be any algorithmic recommendations or social graphs pushing content to users that they didn’t choose to see. Users will be able to search for specific channels by entering their usernames within WhatsApp, making it easier for them to get updates from their preferred sources.
